This policy was developed to support timely access to medicines for specific patient groups within specific circumstances. This policy covers prescribing activities that may occur outside of NZNC guidelines for practice.

This diagnostic access proposal and related agreement (below) were implemented at South Canterbury DHB to support appropriate and safe practice for advanced nursing roles. The outcome was that any nurse, irrespective of employer, could gain authorisation to be able to independently refer for laboratory and radiological services (via both public and private providers).
As of mid-2023, the eligibility criteria is currently being amended to include designated community nurse prescribers, who will be able to apply, having successfully completed their prescribing pathway.
